| Lake Superior Dragon
Boat
Festival |
 |
Late August
Barker’s Island, Superior,
WI
The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival
will be held on August 28 and we need many volunteers
to set up the course, work the
starting line and tear down the course after the Festival.
If you are able to lend a hand, please contact
Jim Sharrow at 724-6909 (home)
or at 590-1062 (cell), or email at jdsharrow@msn.com.
The Dragon Boat Festival is a major one day fund
raiser that has raised over $100,000 per year for the
past seven years to support local non-profits and breast
cancer research and also provides significant annual
financial support for Duluth Boat Club programming. The
Duluth Boat Club runs the races for this worthy event.
This is a fun time helping a great cause.
Volunteers are needed for the following:
Stake dock holders
Starting line stake dock volunteers are needed for the
races on Saturday, from about 8:00 A.M. until
5:00 P.M. Shifts run 2 hours, so shift start times are
8:00, 10:00, 12:00 noon, and 2:00 (The last shift goes
for 3 hours with a half hour break). Four volunteers
are needed for each shift. We encourage you to sign up
for more than one shift. Please let me know when you
are available and we can slot you into the volunteer
schedule.
Course set up and tear down volunteers
We will need two additional launches on August 28 with
operators to serve as floating race marshall boats. These
boats will be positioned along the course this year and
do not have to chase the dragon boats down the course.
We also need volunteers to set up the course in advance and to tear down the course when the races are over.
Finish line
We need at least one volunteer to assist at
the finish line
If you would like more information on the festival itself,
visit the website at www.lakesuperiordragons.com. There
will be entertainment and opening ceremonies on Friday,
along with fireworks, a pancake breakfast on Saturday
and racing all day. |

No Child Left Inside ~ An Open
House for Families and Children |
| |
Sunday, June 20, 2010– Noon to 5:00 P.M.
Honoring our “No Child Left Inside” program. Visitors
Welcome! School's out, so no excuses. It's time to get outside. The Duluth-Superior
Sailing Association and UMD-Minnesota Sea Grant invite anyone with
children (or children at heart) to come down to the pier, ride on
a sail boat, and learn a bit about the waters of Lake Superior. The
event takes place at the DSSA pier on Park Point in Duluth (next
to the public boat launch). June marks the beginning of the sailing season, sailing classes
for youth and adults, as well as cruising vessel clinics. This year
marks the inaugural season of our youth sail coaching program with
weekly small boat races on the bay. Weather permitting, we expect
the Laser fleet to be out in force. Staff and volunteers will be
on hand to explain our mission and programs. Many of the DSSA’s
sailboats will also be on display, and refreshments will be served. Representatives from UMD-Minnesota Sea Grant will be on hand to
help educate the public about invasive species and the
ecology of Lake Superior. Sea Grant’s mission is to facilitate interaction
among the public and scientists to enhance communities, the environment
and economies along Lake Superior and Minnesota's inland waters by
identifying information needs, fostering research, and communicating
results. The UMD-based program is taking part in a national campaign
and protecting local waters from “aquatic hitchhikers”,
non-native plant and animal species that find their way
to inland waters and disrupt the local environment. This year, the
DSSA and
Minnesota Sea Grant are making a cooperative effort to
include lessons in environmental stewardship as part of the youth
sailing program.

| Winter Sailing Movie Parties |
| |
DSSA started a
new program last winter: Sunday night at the movies! A bit
of fun watching some great sailing flicks.
Not open to the public, but free to our members and
friends. We’re all
done for this season, but we had so much fun, we’ll
probably do it again.
